Aquinnah Climate and Energy Committee

Meeting Agenda

January 11, 2022, 10 am

1.     Landfill Solar Array.  The solar array at the capped landfill is approaching its tenth anniversary.  This presents opportunities for the Town under the governing agreements.  Vineyard Power representatives will join us to discuss those opportunities.

2.     Proposed Bylaw Revisions.  The Select Board and Planning Board Plan Review Committee have approved placing our two proposed revisions to the Town bylaws to promote energy transformation in the warrant for the May 10 Town Meeting.   Other towns on the island are also considering such measures for their town meetings, which will occur before ours.  The measures are:

(a) All-electric new construction.  Revise the general bylaws to require that all new or substantially remodeled construction use electricity rather than fossil fuels for heating, cooling, and hot water.  This would require that the Town file a home rule petition with the state legislature, as a number of other towns and cities have done.

        (b)  Wiring for EV charger.  Revise the general bylaws to require that all new or substantially revised construction include a 240-volt outlet, appropriately located, to accommodate an EV charger.

3.     Pool Heating.  Preliminary discussion of whether to require use of renewable energy to heat swimming pools, as Chilmark does.

4.     Energy Questionnaire.   Our Energy Questionnaire has been on the Town’s website for several months.  Do we have a volunteer to tabulate and analyze the results?  We can then share our results with other towns for comparison.

5.     CERT.  The CERT recently did a walk-through of the warming shelter at the town hall and a review of the overnight shelter at the Tribe’s community center.  We hope to have a report fromt Noli and Forrest.  They and others can report also on the fire safety training session held on Saturday, November 13, at 10 am, at the Moshup Beach parking lot.

 7.   Other business.
